McDonald's Coolsingel Rotterdam
Realization March 27, 2015
The old kiosk at the McDonald's on the Coolsingel was once voted to be the ugliest building in Rotterdam. Mei architects was commissioned by McDonald's to create a new McDonald's at the current location with a look that fits the Coolsingel. The new building volume is designed in a way that the rear monumental post office is visible.
Like the historic buildings like the post office, city hall and the Atlanta Hotel, the pavilion features a richly carved facade. The material: gold anodized aluminum with heart-shaped perforations. The perforations represent a crowd on the Coolsingel. This warm and looking stylish aluminum is also vandal-proof and durable.
During the day the building is inviting to shoppers. At the evening the light shines through the perforated aluminum to attract the clubbers.
